With so much promotion telling you you can take a Chlamydia test whenever, wherever, you’d be forgiven for thinking the only way to get one was to loiter outside a nightclub, hang out in your high school toilets or wait for a home delivery kit!
The more traditional among you will be relieved to hear that you can also get tested at your doctors – phew! It’s reassuring to know that for those who prefer medical procedures to stay in the clinic, there is an option for you too!
Getting tested at your GP is easy…
Here are the nuts and bolts: There is no examination – in fact if you’re a guy it’s a urine sample and for the girls you take a vaginal swab yourself. Your results will be available within 10 to 14 days.
The reasons to get a Chlamydia test are the same as they have always been:
1. You wont know if you have it as 75% of women and 50% men have NO symptoms.
2. If left untreated Chlamydia can spread to other areas of the body, and in men can cause painful and swollen testicles.
3. In women it can cause pain in the lower abdomen which can lead to infertility.
4. Having unprotected sex and not getting checked could mean you pass the infection on to someone else.
5. Even if you have the infection a simple dose of antibiotics is all it takes to clear it up.
