B-SIDE MAGAZINE - Press Release 23/01/12

B-Side Magazine is calling on young writers, musicians and artists from across East Anglia to get in touch.

B-Side was set up after a lunchtime pint between three Bury St Edmunds-based promoter friends:  Neil Rayson and Seymour Quigley of Washing Machine/Peacefrog Promotions, and Joe Weaver of Toonteen Industries/Sadpanda Clothing.  Realising that the most exciting music being sent their way seemed to be coming from Suffolk, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire, Neil, Seymour and Joe decided there and then to start a magazine, dedicated to highlighting the range of amazing stuff happening across East Anglia.

Two days later, the website was launched and young writers began sending reviews and features.  A host of local bands and artists – including stadium rock heroes The Darkness – told their online followers about B-Side, resulting in thousands of hits on the website in just a few short weeks.

A free, printed version of the magazine will be launched in mid-February, and will be available to pick up from venues and like-minded shops across the region.  There will also be regular podcasts and videos, with bands coming in to play live sessions exclusively for the site.

B-Side exists because we want to show how easy it can be to make things happen for yourself.  If you have an idea, you don’t have to wait for other people’s permission.  If you don’t feel represented, you can represent yourself.  We don’t want to be alone in the region; if other people want to join us, or take what we’re doing and do it their own way, we’ll all be the better for it.  East Anglia has never been seen as cool by the rest of the World; but there’s a thriving creative scene hidden away that everyone should know about.

So:  GET IN TOUCH.  If you’re in a band, send us your music.  If you’re an artist, photographer or film-maker and would like us to publish or showcase your work, send it in.  If you’re a writer, or would like to try your hand at journalism but don’t know where to start, get in touch.  Send us your reviews, your opinions; whatever you have to offer, we want to hear from you.

Speaking about his experiences growing up, punk legend Joe Strummer of The Clash once said, “I quickly realised that you either became a power or you were crushed.”  Punk as an ethos was very simple:  Do what you feel, never be ashamed and live without regret.  The only way to learn whether you can do something is by doing it and life’s too short to go around wondering, what if…?
DON’T WAIT.
