‘Art Ahoy’ Open Studios event

Ipswich artists open their studios for special weekend event

There’s ‘Art Ahoy’ as a group of local artists are opening their studios to celebrate the Ipswich Maritime Festival.

Forty working artists, who work from Atrium Studios at University Campus Suffolk (UCS), will be showcasing their work that ranges from fine art, sculpture, film and graphic design.

The special event consists of a free exhibition, film screenings and art workshops with a number of hands-on crafts activities.

The opening night, on Friday 17 August, will also feature acoustic live entertainment from John Brett and Jack Rundell, of Ipswich bands The B. Goodes and The Waxing Captors.

One artist and organiser Beth Jones said: “We got together and thought the maritime festival would provide the perfect opportunity for local artists to showcase their work. The Atrium Studios are a stone’s throw from the quay, but many people don’t know we’re here. This is a great way to show just how much creativity is going on right on Ipswich’s doorstep.

“Festival-goers will be able to buy work directly from the makers, as well as have a chance to chat to artists themselves and get a first-hand experience of the workshops, that are usually just tucked away from view.”

The opening event will be held from 6-8pm on Friday 17 August and will feature films, live music, meet the artist, exhibition, open studios. Everyone is invited to bring a bottle.

The rest of the showcase weekend is as follows:

Saturday 18 August, 11am-3pm (films11-4pm)
Meet the artist, chain-making workshop and films.
Sunday 19 August 11am- 3pm (films12-4pm)
Meet the artist, drop-in boat folding workshop and film

The studios are on the 2nd floor of west building on Neptune Quay, UCS. Situated in what was previously the Suffolk College catering dept
