Many of you may already be aware that famous names such as these play Thetford Forest each summer. We have known for a while, but have never publicised the fact on the following grounds:
1) IP1 has a fairly strict Suffolk-only policy when it comes to promoting stuff. And Thetford itself is in Norfolk, albeit on the border with Suffolk.
2) IP1 tends to avoid promoting mainstream artists – preferring to focus on street-level creative talent in the area.
However, since learning that Thetford Forest is in fact in Suffolk, we have come to a decision that maybe we are too strict in regards to the first point! Also, despite being ‘mainstream’, some of the acts that play gigs at the High Lodge venue are of interest to you, our readers.
So far, the following three acts have been announced to play Thetford Forest this year:
Boyzone
Katherine Jenkins
Suede
Of these, we recommend Suede, who back in the Britpop years were one of the best British bands around. Ordinarily, we would overlook an act like this as a has-been, but they recently released a pretty good album called Bloodsports. Here’s their potted history…
Suede bounded onto the British music scene with the eponymous No 1 debut album released in 1993 that sold over 100,000 in its first week of release, kick-starting the Britpop revolution and going on to become a Mercury Music Prize winner.
Success continued throughout the 90s with further No 1 albums like Coming Up and Head Music and hits Dog Man Star and Sci-Fi Lullabies.
Fronted by the charismatic Brett Anderson, top 10 singles like Animal Nitrate, Stay Together, Trash, Beautiful Ones, Saturday Night, Lazy, Filmstar and Electricity epitomised the vibrancy, edge and excitement of the band and ensured an impressive chart presence across a decade before going on indefinite hiatus in 2003.
After re-forming for some well-received live shows in 2010-11, Suede got down to recording their sixth studio album. Bloodsports was released in 2013 to overwhelmingly positive reviews, marked as one of the great rock comebacks and regarded as one of the best albums of the year.
