RAMP Recordings launches new Ipswich nightclub, Paper Bag Factory!

Local legend Tom Kerridge, founder and owner of RAMP Recordings, is opening a new nightclub in Ipswich in a move that will put a rocket launcher up the arse of the town’s clubbing credentials.

In 2005, Tom got a distribution deal, pressed up some records and sold them. A vinyl-based record label was born, specialising in experimental hip hop, bass and dance music.

Since then RAMP Recordings has grown into one of the most respected independent labels in the UK and across Europe; signing artists whose music has made regular appearances on Radio 1 and 1Xtra shows hosted by the likes of Mary Anne Hobbs, Benji B, Annie Mac and Gilles Peterson.

RAMP also represents the type of independent local business that is to be celebrated in terms of its offering as a local cultural export (Accidental Music, page 24).

Now, label owner Tom Kerridge is at it again – launching a new nightclub in Ipswich called Paper Bag Factory.

The new music and events space in Falcon Street, which has seen a few iffy venues come and go in recent times (Bar Coda, Tate’s) is a listed building that (who would’ve guessed it) was once a paper bag factory. We’re guessing this might be Tom’s inspiration for the nightclub’s new name…

“I was born in Ipswich, and I’ve lived in the area most of my life,” Tom told us. “Big DJs and touring bands have always avoided coming here because there is no venue that will book them – I’m hoping Paper Bag Factory will change that.”

Officially opening next Saturday night, Paper Bag Factory’s launch event brings UTTU head honcho, DJ Haus, to Ipswich. Incredibly, PBF’s inaugural event will be FREE, so get down early to avoid queues!

Following that up, on August 23, Paper Bag Factory hosts an appearance from DJ, graffiti artist, actor, producer, and all round massive celeb, GOLDIE! (Full event details and tickets available here.)
