In an almost hidden turning, just off unassuming residential street, Cullingham Road, you can find Ipswich’s Old Boatyard at a tangent with the River Gipping. This is also the home of vintage fashion retailer and sewing studio, Fairweather Vintage, housed in a unit that was once the workshop of a sailboat manufacturer; the unit accommodated varying enterprises before Fairweather Vintage moved in, including an Apple Mac refurbishment centre and a graphic design firm, leaving the space in dire need of an interior design overhaul.
In the space of five months, the unit received a new lease of life. Kelly Fairweather and her graphic designer boyfriend, James of empiremade.co.uk, cleared out the entire 1,650 square foot area, removing the tired blue carpet and concrete ramps that divided the floor space. The walls and flooring were transformed into a blank canvas with a lick of white paint; it was then that the interior decorating process could begin.
Almost every item in the unit is salvaged and recycled, from the quilted leather sofa that resides invitingly near the entrance, to the changing room structured using old internal doors. Atmospheric pendant lamps have replaced the harsh, white lighting that originally hung from the roof and, located at one end of the unit, huge barn doors can be opened in Summer to allow extra light and warmth. A plethora of unique, vintage clothing is placed on copper-toned rails that can be drawn up to the ceiling via a pulley system to widen the area, making this the perfect space for events and entertainment, and the couple have intentionally left a blank wall untouched for studio photography work.
Kelly plans to open the unit for events hire, launching opportunities for anything from photography shoots to fashion shows that could take place in the spacious environment. If you’re looking to hold an event or workshop, contact .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
