“I’m dead excited to announce the Spring tour of Mouthtronica – my new one man show. It’s an intense mix of storytelling and high energy genre-hopping human beatboxing. It’s a chance for me to play some new tracks and also to tell the story of how I became a beatboxer, going right back to when I was 3 years old playing Arabic drums and belly dancing at my Iraqi-Jewish grandmother’s parties. I’m also teaching a beatbox masterclass at each venue before the show.”
Shlomo is one of the world’s finest human beatboxers, known for his experimental collaborations with a diverse range of artists such as DJ Yoda, Bjork, Martha Wainwright, Hexstatic, Portico Quartet, Jarvis Cocker, Mad Professor and his awesome beatbox troupe The Vocal Orchestra.
Classically trained as a drummer and percussionist since the age of 8, Shlomo took up jazz drums in his teens, but soon found his ability to create the same rhythms using only his voice. In 2002 he moved to Leeds to study Astrophysics, but his beatboxing quickly got him noticed and he joined the award-winning hip hop group Foreign Beggars, heading on tour across the UK, Europe and Canada. After collaborating with Icelandic superstar Bjork on her all-vocal album Medulla in 2004, he was spotted by Jools Holland who invited him on to his BBC2 show. Shlomo then became an artist in residence at London’s Southbank Centre where he now curates a series of collaborative concerts called Music Through Unconventional Means.
Shlomo is keen on using beatboxing as an educational tool, and runs several educational projects including the BAC Beatbox Academy, working with inner city kids in South London.
This man can make magical music with his mouth. Shlomo takes the art of beatboxing beyond the ‘look at me’ gimmick – he makes real, moving music.
“The kid’s good. Jaw-droppingly good.” The Guardian
“Master of the fine art of beatboxing” The Independent
“He’s like a one-man Hollywood action film soundtrack” The Times
“Brilliant soulful vocal gymnastics” Evening Standard
