Vist IP1zine's Profile

INTERVIEW: Polar Collective!

Polar Collective are a five piece band from Ipswich who combine elements of ska, pop, hiphop and indie to create a fresh energetic sound. So far they’ve played at numerous local events and have just released their 1st EP Snakes and Ladders, Emily Godden caught up with them to find out more.

In five words, describe your sound/music.
Fun, energetic, jumpy, child-like and sophisticated.

What’s Polar Collective’s USP?
I think the fact that we love to have a laugh and enjoy ourselves. We see so many bands that come out and play to a fourth wall… it’s really important to involve the audience as much as possible.

Is there a natural leader in the group?
We all lead in different ways. Adam leads in height for example…

Who would you most like to be able to jam with?
We’d love to hang and duet with Madness. We were quite jealous to see our dream has already been fulfilled by a certain Olly Murs! But we’re not that bitter…

If you could have a super power what would it be?
To possess the ability to create super powers… resulting in an infinite number of super powers.

What’s on your music playlist?
You’d be shocked if you looked at all our playlists together. We have everything from Mac Miller, Don Broco and Bon Iver to One Direction, Busted and Enter Shikari.

If you had a tour bus, which venues would you want to travel to and play at?
We would love to play the academies around the UK. We love that ‘underground’ feel to a gig, but obviously we wouldn’t turn down Wembley!

Marmite, love it or hate it?
Hate it! We prefer a nice dollop of chocolate spread.

What makes Polar Collective click?
Playing music as best mates and the arguments we have… None of this would happen if we weren’t passionate about what we’re doing!

What would you most like to be doing right now?
Sipping a Sol Beer whilst relaxing on a beach in Ravenna.

What’s the worst thing that could happen at a gig/concert?
Andrew (our bassist) whispering harmonies. It’s extremely disturbing, trust me!

Any guilty pleasures? – (Anyone been caught reading Fifty Shades of Grey?)
None of us have been caught yet! We all love a bit of One Direction, especially when we’re all in the car together with the windows open. However, we don’t feel guilty about it!

Most embarrassing moment?
When Andrew came into practice with a ‘Drift King’ t-shirt on - a week after crashing his car into a ditch!

How do you like to chill out?
If it’s a nice day, we like to play frisbee. But if it’s not, we like to chill out playing FIFA - much to Gryphen’s refusal!

Sum up your EP in one sentence:
Snakes & Ladders is about remaining young at heart despite the inevitability of growing up.

What’s next for Polar Collective?
We’re going to see how the EP goes and continue doing what we love - writing, recording and playing high-energy shows; we are keen to expand into other towns and spread the ‘Polar’ word!
