David Bowie: the actor

Posed for by the painter in his Leiston garret (Hah! Garrett’s of Leiston! – in-joke for the East Anglians), this is a way of encapsulating the most notable of David Bowie’s prime period personae. From Thomas Jerome Newton (the character in The man who fell to earth), to the Young American, Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, The Thin White Duke and Just a Gigolo. People think that Madonna invented postmodern constant reinvention of the image/‘personality’, but Bowie was there way before. And making far superior music. (oil on board)
Retrospective exhibition at The Freudian Sheep Contemporary Art Gallery, 104 St Helens Street, Ipswich runs from Saturday June 6 to Friday 3 July 2015.
